SEO MCP: from setup
to a useful GSC review.

A focused workflow for finding pages worth investigating, with a reusable prompt and the checks that keep an AI analysis grounded.

What MCP adds to SEO work

An SEO MCP server gives a compatible AI application access to tools supplied by an SEO service or integration. Instead of asking the assistant to guess your traffic, you can have it request specific data and explain the result. MCP defines the connection; it does not create a new search index or make the analysis automatically correct. MCP architecture documentation ↗

  2. 02AI application
  3. 03MCP tool
  4. 04Source data

The useful output is a traceable decision: which page needs attention, which figures support that choice and what you should check next. “Improve my SEO” is too broad a starting point.

These are starting points from the directory, not interchangeable data sources. Inspect the publisher, supported client, authentication method and tool list before choosing. A third-party server that calls a Google API is not necessarily maintained by Google.

For a GSC review, choose a connector that can query the property you control and start with read-only access. If you already have a usable export, a file-based review may be enough. Compare SEO MCP servers →

First, prove that the data call works

Connect through your AI application’s supported integration flow, authorize the intended account, then ask it to list the available tools. Run one small request before asking for a full report. Credentials, plan access and tool availability are separate checks.

Documentation worked. The metric request did not.

In our Ahrefs MCP preflight, the documentation tool returned a valid schema. A subsequent domain-rating request returned Insufficient plan. No metric was returned, so there was no result to interpret.

This verifies an access limitation in that session, not data accuracy or a comparison between vendors. We did not complete a live GSC analysis through MCP for this guide.

Ahrefs documents hosted MCP access from its Lite plan upward, with API-unit and row limits. Check your current entitlement even if an exposed tool name includes “free.” For this server, use a supported AI integration; Ahrefs directs custom programmatic workflows to its public API. A practical Search Console workflow

The aim is a short investigation list, not an automatic rewrite queue. Use this sequence after your connector can retrieve the intended property.

  1. Fix the scope before comparing

Select the exact property and search type. Compare two equal periods, for example the latest 28 complete days with the preceding 28. Keep country and device filters consistent. For a seasonal business, add a comparable seasonal period before interpreting a decline.

  2. Retrieve page and query together

Ask for page-query rows in each period, preserving both keys, clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. A site-wide query total is not enough to say which page should change.

  3. Check coverage and calculations

Record the date range, filters, retrieved row count and pagination. Calculate CTR as clicks divided by impressions; a zero-impression row has no usable CTR. Use separate property totals to describe the site as a whole.

  4. Separate the investigations

A page near the first results page with substantial impressions deserves a different review from one averaging position 60. Look at current search intent, the result format and ranking movement before choosing a title update, content refresh or technical investigation.

Google’s Search Analytics API supports date ranges, dimensions and filters, but returns top rows rather than guaranteeing every row. Its maximum page size is 25,000, and finalized data can be requested. The connector may impose additional limits. Search Analytics API reference ↗

Reusable starting point

A prompt you can adapt

This is an analysis instruction, not a universal MCP command. Tool names and accepted parameters depend on the server. Replace the scope with your own property and business priorities.

Review my Google Search Console performance using read-only tools.

First show the available GSC tools and confirm the exact property I select.
If GSC access is unavailable, stop and explain what is missing. Do not use
estimated third-party traffic as a replacement for Search Console data.

Compare the latest 28 complete days of finalized data with the preceding
28 days. State both date ranges. Use Web search and the same country and
device filters in both periods; show the filters explicitly.

Fetch page-query rows for both periods with clicks, impressions, CTR and
average position. Preserve the page-query keys. Report row limits, pages
of results fetched and any known missing data. Retrieve property totals
separately; do not claim the row sums are complete property totals.

Return up to 10 candidates for human review. For each, show:
page, query, clicks in both periods, click change, impressions in both
periods, current CTR, average position in both periods, a hypothesis,
the evidence supporting it and the next check needed.

Calculate CTR from clicks / impressions. Keep insufficient-data cases
separate. Distinguish a ranking problem from a possible snippet problem.
Do not apply a universal CTR target or present possible gains as a forecast.
Do not edit pages, submit URLs, send messages or change any settings.

Worked example: three different next steps

Illustrative data, not a client result. The fictional rows below demonstrate how the same review can produce different actions. The position column shows the previous period followed by the current period.

Page / queryClicks
previous → current
Current impressionsCurrent CTRAverage position
/guides/site-audittechnical seo audit checklist30 → 24-6 clicks2,4001.00%8.1 → 8.4

/guides/log-analysisseo log analysis0 → 00 clicks180.00%— → 61.0

/guides/site-audit

Inspect the current result and competing formats. Stable average position makes this a candidate for closer snippet and intent review, not proof of a title problem.

/tools/internal-links

Investigate the ranking decline, query relevance and page changes before rewriting the title.

/guides/log-analysis

Keep outside the immediate shortlist. There is little evidence here to evaluate a snippet change.

For the first row, 24 ÷ 2,400 gives a CTR of 1.00%, and clicks declined by 6. Those calculations are observations. “The title needs work” is only a hypothesis until you inspect the page and results.

Validate the finding before making a change

Open the same property and filters in Search Console and spot-check a few returned rows. Its report separates clicks, impressions, CTR and average position; chart and table totals may differ because aggregation differs. Average position also does not describe a fixed result seen by every searcher. Google’s performance-report guide ↗

  • Check the page: is it accessible, relevant to the query and still targeting the intended audience?
  • Check the result: does the current search results page favor a different format or intent?
  • Record one hypothesis: explain what you expect an edit to improve and what evidence would contradict it.
  • Measure later: log the publication date and compare like-for-like data. A before-and-after change alone does not establish causation.

Keep the agent’s output auditable: source, scope, figures, hypothesis and next check. When access fails or the sample is too small, “not enough evidence” is a useful result.

Build a small, relevant toolset

Common questions

What does an SEO MCP server do?+

It exposes SEO data or actions to a compatible AI application. The data still comes from the connected service, such as a crawler, Search Console integration or SEO vendor.

Does MCP give me free access to paid SEO data?+

No. The server, underlying service and AI application can have separate access requirements and costs. Check the actual tools available to your account before planning a workflow.

Is a Search Console MCP server an official Google product?+

Check who publishes the specific server. Support for the Google Search Console API does not by itself mean Google maintains or endorses the integration.

Can I use the prompt without an MCP connection?+

Yes. Export compatible data for both periods and ask your assistant to analyze those files. The workflow is similar, but that is a file-based analysis, not a live MCP retrieval.
